Word Games You Can Play Offline on a Plane (iPhone)
· 5 min read

Short answer: a word game works on a plane if its puzzles and dictionary live on your phone rather than on a server. Test it in airplane mode at home before you fly — that ten-second check is more reliable than any App Store description.
Why some word games die without a signal
Three things usually break. Server-made puzzles: some daily puzzles are fetched each morning, so the app has nothing to show once you are in the air. Live opponents: anything built around playing another person is obviously out. Mandatory ads: a game that requires a rewarded ad to continue a level, unlock hints or get another life will stall at a spinner when the ad cannot load.
Everything else — word searches, anagrams, category sorting, tile placement, handcrafted levels — can run entirely on the device. The word list is a few megabytes and ships with the app.
The pre-flight test, in four steps
- Install and open it once on Wi-Fi. First launch often downloads puzzle packs.
- Turn on airplane mode at home and play a full round. If it hangs now, it will hang later.
- Try the extras too. Hints, the daily puzzle and the next-level screen are the usual failure points, not the main board.
- Clear any pending reward screen before you board, so you do not start the flight on a dialog you cannot dismiss.
What to pack for a long flight
- More than one mechanic. Eight hours of the same word search gets old. Several modes, or a campaign with changing levels, holds up better.
- Local progress. No account means nothing to sync and nothing lost.
- One-handed play. Tray tables are small and the seat in front reclines.
- A quiet difficulty curve. Untimed modes are better company on a plane than a countdown clock.
How Wordfly Puzzle behaves offline
We built Wordfly Puzzle for exactly this. All four modes — Groups, Letter Grid, Tile Board and Word Drop — plus the handcrafted campaign run on the device. There is no account, no sync, and no level that waits for an ad: if no ad can load, the game simply carries on. Ads are the only part that needs a connection, and one optional purchase removes them entirely.

If you prefer arcade to letters on a flight, Bounce Em Balls plays offline the same way.

Frequently asked
Do word games work in airplane mode?
Single-player ones that store their puzzles locally do. Anything with live opponents or server-made daily puzzles usually does not.
Will ads block me offline?
In a well-made game, no — the ad is skipped when it cannot load. Games that gate progress behind rewarded ads are the ones to avoid before a flight.
Does battery matter?
Word games are light on battery compared with 3D games, and airplane mode itself saves power because the phone stops hunting for a signal.
