iPhone Puzzle Games: How to Find Ones Actually Worth Playing

Short answer: pick an iPhone puzzle game by how it behaves in the first ten minutes, not by its store rating. A good one opens straight into a puzzle, works in airplane mode, and never stops you from playing because a timer has not refilled.
The five kinds of iPhone puzzle game

- Escape rooms and story puzzles. Long and beautiful, and mostly free to download — if there is a price, it usually sits inside the game rather than on the store page.
Five traps that ruin a free puzzle game
- Lives and energy timers. Failing a level and being told to wait 25 minutes is a payment prompt, not a difficulty curve.
- Ads you cannot finish a level without. A banner is fine. A mandatory video between every board is not.
- A sign-up wall. A puzzle does not need your email address.
- Online-only levels. Fine at home, useless on a plane or the subway.
- Difficulty that only sells hints. If levels get unfairly hard right after the hint shop appears, that is a design decision about your wallet.
A ten-minute test before you commit
- Install, then switch on airplane mode and open the game cold. Does it play?
- Fail a level on purpose. Can you immediately retry?
